The National Dress has several religious beliefs identifying its designs and has therefore remained the same from the years. Daura-Suruwal, typically termed as 'Labeda-Suruwal' is the traditional Nepali dress. The Nepali dress for women is a cotton sari (Guniu), a cloth garment worn with a blouse.
The Sherpas are regarded as "eastern people", derived from shar "east" and pa "people". They are an ethnic group from the most mountainous region of Nepal. They are of Tibetan origin living in the high altitudes of the Himalayan region. In the Tibetan language, Sherpa literally means ‘people of the east’. Their major occupations are agriculture, animal husbandry and trade. They are best known for their skills in trekking and mountaineering.
Tharus are an ethnic group, indigenous to the Terai -- the southern foothills of the Himalayas in Nepal. Tharus are the largest and oldest ethnic group of people in the Terai area and are found living in close proximity to densely forested regions. They are dark in complexion and have smart, trim bodies. Farming and business are their major occupations.
The Newars, with their own language and script, are the oldest ethnic group of Nepal. The Kathmandu Valley is the original home of the Newars and are also spread throughout Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, and Kirtipur. Although trade and farming are their primary occupations, they are especially renowned for their artistic and architectural skills. Their language is Newari.
Kirats or Kiratis are indigenous ethnic groups of the Himalayas (mid-hills) extending eastward from Nepal into India, Burma and beyond.The Kiratis are one of the most ancient people who ruled Kathmandu valley centuries ago. “Rai” word is the sub-tribe of kirat tribe. Rai are the native or indigenous people of Nepal. Rai people are very noble, democratic, skillful, brave, self-sufficient and friendly.
The Gurung people, also called Tamu, are an ethnic group who migrated from Mongolia in the 6th century to the central region of Nepal. Gurungs have their own language and are considered good in farming. They have rich tradition of music and culture. They are known for their bravery and discipline and are valued as brave soldiers.
Thakalis mainly reside in the Kali Gandaki river region and are known as clever business people. The origin of the Thakalis is the Thak Khola, a high valley in Mustang District. Three types of Thakali are found in the Thak Khola valley – Tin Gaule Thakali, Marphali Thakali and Tamang Thakali. They have their own language and distinct culture. They are known for their hospitality, good salesmanship and cleanliness, and many of them are successful businessmen.
The Magars live in the western region of Nepal. They are Tibetan Burma origin. Their language, Magar Kura depicts their affinity to Tibet-Burmese tongue and culture. Many Magar communities can be found in the mid-western areas of Nepal. Their major occupations are farming, military service, weaving, hunting and fishing.
Thakuris are also called Rajput. Thakuri kings ruled over the country up to the middle of the 12th century AD. They are traditionally rulers, leaders and warriors. They are among the most influential and well-to-do social classes. They are mostly engaged in government service, army and police force. Some of them are remained farmers and are relatively poor.
Tamangs reside mainly in the high hills north of Kathmandu. Their social practices and customs are based on Buddhism, and they have their own language. They mainly work as farmers, laborers and porters. They are very good at art of Thanka painting. In Tibetan language, ‘Tamang’ means ‘Horse Traders’.
